BARBADOS  HOUSE

Although directly at the Barbados Coast, the ocean is not directly visible on the site. Due to a low band of rocks, a view can only be obtained either a few meters above ground or from within a gully which crosses the site and penetrates the rocks. This led to a design with a living area in the gully, shaded by the main volume during the daytime. On top of the house, a terrace enjoyed a splendid panoramic view at night. Technically the house was split in a low tech- and a high tech part. On-site the gully was manipulated and prepared to support the main volume. That was entirely prefabricated and shipped in two containers which finally became part of the structure. In this manner on-site building activity was reduced to a minimum, enabling a highly controlled quality in spite of the distance.
