PERISCOPE BUILDING
To prevent the shore of the Bosporus being spoiled by uncontrolled development, the city of Istanbul disallowed buildings higher than one meter in some areas. This inspired the sunken patio-house. A glass wall joining the house and the courtyard contains a large horizontal mirror, which, in conjunction forms a periscope, with a meter-high mirror above ground. This provides a superb combined view of the Bosporus against the courtyard when in the house below.
