To prevent the shore of the Bosporus being spoiled by uncontrolled development, the city of Istanbul disallowed buildings higher than one metre in some areas. This inspired the sunken patio-house. A glass wall joining the house and the courtyard contains a large horizontal mirror, which, in conjunction forms a periscope, with a metre-high mirror above ground. This providing a superb combined view of the Bosporus against the courtyard when in the house below.
